As a rom-com, kulang sa kilig factor ang ‘My Rebound Girl’ .

If we use the same comparison sa kabuuan ng pelikula, unfortunately, it’s not the “perfect blend”. It’s not even the right blend. Matabang ito, despite its attempt at romance and comedy.
The movie starts with Rocky getting dumped by her current boyfriend para makipagbalikan ito sa kaniyang ex-girlfriend. Dahil pagod na siyang maging “rebound girl”, Rocky made a list that’s supposed to prevent her from being one ulit. Meanwhile, Rich (Joseph Marco), just got dumped by his long-term girlfriend. It so happens na gusto ni Rocky na magbukas ng coffee shop, samantalang si Rich naman, he wants to save his family’s coffee farm. So after a not-so-cute meet-cute (nag-aasaran sila) and they become business partners (mostly kasi parang wala silang choice), they realize na baka mahal nila ang isa’t-isa.
To be fair, nakakatawa ang ibang moments sa pelikula. Maybe it’s because of Gonzaga has the guts to let herself loose when a scene calls for it. Walang hiya-hiya, go lang ng go mag-ingay, kumain ng pizza habang umiiyak, lahat. Then again, maybe “nakakatawa” is not even the right word for it. Baka mas angkop ang “bemusing” para sa kanya sa pelikulang ito. Alam n’yo yung feeling na parang nakakatawa ang isang bagay pero parang “what the heck” at medyo confused ka kung bakit you find it funny? Parang ganun ang My Rebound Girl.
Maybe because medyo may disconnect sa kuwento. Ang nabanggit na listahan on how not to be a rebound girl? Poof. Nawala na lang sa eksena without an explanation. Parang nilagay lang yung para lang to showcase Alex’s calligraphy skills when it’s supposed to be a good source of conflict. Then there’s the chemistry (or lack thereof) between Gonzaga and Marco. Walang spark ang dalawa when they’re onscreen together, so mahirap maging invested sa kahihinatnan ng relationship nila. It doesn’t help them na on their own, hindi rin masyadong worthy ng investment ang kanilang mga characters, or that parang whirlwind romance ang peg (come to think of it parang walang defining moment kung kailan nagbago ang pagtingin nila sa isa’t isa).
(Aside: this is kind of spoilery at medyo nitpicky pero may isang eksena sa pelikula na despite being coffee experts in their own right, nagtimpla sila ng instant coffee. Does. Not. Compute.)
Overall, walang bago sa My Rebound Girl. Yes, it’s relatable, in a way, and funny, in a way. But that’s because it tries to check the marks off the Pinoy rom-com trope checklist. Kung gusto mong panoorin si Alex Gonzaga being funny and loud and staying pretty while doing it, or to see Joseph Marco’s abs, go lang. Pero don’t expect na kikiligin ka sa kanilang dalawa. ♦
