The digitally restored version of Lino Brocka’s ‘Insiang’ will return to the 53rd New York Film Festival happening at the New York Lincoln Center from September 25 to October 11, 2015. This is the second time ‘Insiang’ is gracing the festival. It was also part of the retrospective section in the 44th edition in 2006.
This Brocka classic stars Hilda Koronel in the titular role. She gets raped by her mother’s boyfriend, blamed, and eventually turned out of her own home. Of the character, Brocka wrote, “I need this character to recreate the ‘violence’ stemming from urban overpopulation, to show the annihilation of a human being, the loss of human dignity caused by the physical and social environment…”
‘Insiang’ first premiered internationally at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976. Since then, it has also returned to Cannes in its restored glory last May 16, 2015. ♦
