Kilig Iyak-Tawa ang tamang combo starter pack for the uninitiated Pinoy moviegoers, who probably makes up half of #AlDubNation. A beautifully-shot and rendered film led by charming lead actors and backed by awesome supporting cast – ang ‘Imagine You and Me’, kahit maypagka-predictable ang takbo ng story, ay tempered ang fantasies at malayo sa KalyeSerye. Hindi dapat palampasin ng #AlDubNation.
WRITER: Aloy Adlawan
DIRECTOR: Michael Tuviera
CAST: Alden Richards | Maine Mendoza | Jasmine Curtis-Smith | Irma Adlawan | Cacai Bautista | Cai Cortez | Jerald Napoles
“‘Yung tataa?”, ang ‘Imagine You and Me’ ay your typical rom-com with drama: manic pixie dream girl (MPDG) Gara (Mendoza) meets soulful, lost boy Andrew (Richards), and they realize each other’s dreams. Insert multiple conflicts at the end for more. Pero kahit na typical rom-com ito, there are a lot of good things about it that might interest even non-AlDub supporters.
Individual charm pa lang, hindi maitatwang Gara and Andrew are bound to knock your socks off. Pagpasok pa lang sa eksena ng mukha ng dalawang artista ay sasalubungin agad ng tili at hiyawan ng mga manonood. While beginner actor si Mendoza, she proves to her followers that she can hold her own hindi lang sa pagpapatawa. Richards is still flawless in drama. The supporting cast is a powerhouse of women who are unafraid to rally behind the leads. Both Isay (Curtis-Smith) and Tita Toni (Adlawan) wow in drama, while Winona (Bautista) and Vangie (Cortez) bring on the laughs. Watch out for all the ‘nangingilid ang mga mata sa luha’ scenes dahil lahat ng ito ay magaling na na-handle both visually and by the artists.
Mag pagka-malayo ang trailer sa movie, which is why may feeling akong the trailer did not do the movie justice. Pero malamang ay sinadya ito para sa mga manonood, to entice them to watch the movie in its entirety – a clever move.
The best things about the movie are the location and the cinematography. Ginamit ng production team ang kagandahan ng Italy locations pero hindi overwhelming to the point na nakalilimutan ang story. And the drone shots used are a far cry from drone shots used in other films produced in 2015. Walang pixelated shots! Yay!
Some elements known to have originated in Eat! Bulaga’s KalyeSerye were used in the movie. Hindi naman naging awkward ang mga ito pero if you’re not a KalyeSerye watcher, may mga bagay na hindi ka mage-gets. It’s not your fault and okay lang if ‘di mo makuha. Wala namang mawawala sa’yo.
Though it’s refreshing to see both Mendoza and Richards play different characters other than their signature Yaya Dub and Alden, I won’t recommend watching the film if you: 1) hate rom-com, and; 2) hate predictable stories. May pagka-predictable ang storyline, as in. Habang nanonood kami, kami ‘yung annoying na nagbubulungan na alam na namin ang susunod na eksena, lalo na sa mga conflicts used in the film. The story could have been written better. ‘Yung umpisa pa lang, masyadong nagtagal ang character exposition ni Gara. Madami pa sanang na-explore na mga storylines kahit ‘nung mga supporting cast. That would have made the film much more interesting.
Is this movie fan service? Maybe. Winner ka kung #AlDub fan ka, runner-up kung first-timer sa Pinoy films, medyo lugi kung avid Pinoy film watcher ka. Overall, it was a good first try. Lumabas kami ng sinehan na naka-smile.♦
