The TIFF screening will be the world premiere of ‘Honor Thy Father.’ It stars John Lloyd Cruz, Meryl Soriano, and Tirso Cruz III. This is John LLoyd’s first leading role in an independent film. Controversially, he shaved his head for the part in spite of it possibly affecting an endorsement contract. Set in Baguio, the film is another gripping crime drama from the team that made the sleeper hit ‘On the Job.’
Fajardo’s ‘Imbisibol,’ on the other hand, had already made the rounds of other local film festivals. Adapted from a one-act play by Herlyn Gail Alegre, it was shown in the first Sinag Maynila Independent Film Festival and in the recently concluded Cinemalaya 2015. Filmed with Japan’s cold winter as background, this quiet film shows the plight of illegal Filipino immigrants in the land of the rising sun.
