After its triumphant box-office success, “Heneral Luna” continues to make waves as it represents the country in two of the most well-known award-giving bodies in the world. Jerrold Tarog’s historical bio-pic was recently accepted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as the Philippines’ official submission to the Best Foreign Film category in the 73rd Golden Globes Awards. Last September, it was also picked to be country’s bet for the Best Foreign-language Film category in the upcoming 88th Academy Awards.
For the Golden Globes, Heneral Luna is among 71 entries from 46 countries submitted for consideration. Five nominees from this shortlist will be announced on December 10. The winner of the Golden Globe will then be declared in the January 10, 2016 awards ceremony.
Only one film per country can be submitted for consideration in the Academy Awards (Oscars). Last September 21, the Film Academy of the Philippines and a committee helmed by Mel Chionglo picked Heneral Luna from a selection of six features, which included among them Brillante Mendoza’s “Taklub” and Carlitos Siguinon-Reyna’s “Hari Ng Tondo.” For the 88th Oscars, eighty-two countries are vying to be nominated for the Best Foreign-language Film. The nominees selected from this list will be announced on January 14, 2016, with the victor claiming the famed trophy on the awards ceremony, which will be held on February 29, 2016.
To date, “Heneral Luna” has grossed over ₱253 million in the Philippines. It is the country’s highest grossing historical film and also the highest grossing independent Filipino film of all time. ♦
